Description

The Eating Difficulties service is a specialist service that supports children, young people and families experiencing a range of eating difficulties and other presentations. The team also supports children, young people and families who are diagnosed with Avoidant and Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID).

The team supports the emotional health and wellbeing of children, young people and their families. The team will assess and treat a wide range of emotional and behavioural problems including:

  • Food avoidance based on smell, taste, texture, sight or caused by other mental illnesses
  • Restrictive and compensatory behaviours
  • Body image concerns
  • Weight loss
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Weight and shape concerns

  • What to expect

The Eating Difficulties and ARFID Service provides child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) to children up to the age of 18 and their families.

We provide a range of treatments such as:

    • Psychological Therapy
    • Family Intervention
    • Physical Monitoring (weight and blood pressure)
    • Meal Planning (alongside dietetic services)
    • Liaising with external agencies (GPs, Schools and other services)
    • If applicable, referring to alternative related services

You will be seen within eight weeks of us receiving the referral from your GP, school or social worker. During the initial consultation we will assess your needs, find out more about what’s brought you to us and think of ways we or our partner agencies can support you. At the end of our assessment, we will agree a treatment plan with you, which is regularly reviewed. Once you are allocated to a specific clinician on our team, you will agree and review some goals you wish to achieve and that help us focus our work with you. There night be some waiting time involved, but we will do our best to support you in the meantime.
