The adolescent and young adult service at the Tavistock Centre is one of very few NHS clinics that specialises in helping young people between the ages of 14 – 25 and up to 30 years of age in the Young Persons Consultation Service (YPCS).

Our service is designed to understand what you, as an adolescent or young adult, is going through. We aim to help you come to understand this better for yourself.

We draw on our knowledge of working with issues affecting this age group. Central to our work is the individual: your own experience of what it’s like being an adolescent or young adult, and the ways in which you understand what’s been troubling you.

What to expect

The YPCS offers four free and confidential consultation sessions to young people.

During sessions you can talk with one of our clinicians about painful emotions and thoughts. They may be ones that you haven’t felt able to open up about before, which can sometimes be upsetting but can also bring a sense of relief and understanding, and can provide a way to move forward.

Your clinician listens carefully and makes comments to help you understand your difficulties. They don’t usually offer direct advice, but work with you to help you become more aware of the issues that cause your problems. This way you can find better ways to deal with them.

We aim to help you get a clearer picture of your particular difficulty. Depending on what you want and which approach seems best, your clinician may discuss ways of getting further help.

Who you’ll meet

Our team includes professionals who all have particular experience in the psychological and emotional difficulties adolescents and young adults can face.
