Description

Our Purpose
  • To enable disabled, Deaf and autistic people to be themselves, take risks and live life to the full

  • To focus on the needs of the whole family and break down isolation

  • To promote respect of disabled, Deaf and autistic people and support their full participation in society

Our Services

We run inclusive after school clubs and holiday playschemes where disabled and non-disabled children play together. Markfield’s highly trained staff are experienced in including children with a wide range of disabilities. We have youth clubs in the afternoon and evening with music, art, sport, films, where young people can socialise, relax and choose activities they enjoy. Our daytime and evening social clubs for adults with learning disabilities, autism or Aspergers Syndrome include dance, art, trips and discussion groups.

We have a wide range of family support services running at Markfield and outreach at other local venues. Our services aim to empower families to advocate for their rights, access services and participate in decision making. We focus on ways families can build supportive networks and get involved in the local community. We offer face to face and telephone advice, an information hub, free parent group coffee mornings and a monthly family club. We also community drop in sessions for all local families such as our Saturday Open Access adventure play and Under 5’s stay and play.

The word ‘disabled’ and what it means to Markfield

Lots of us have physical, sensory or learning impairments; need support to carry out day to day activities; have long term health or mental health conditions or emotional and behavioural needs. These things do not have to stop us living full lives.

Since the 1980s disabled people have used a different way of thinking about disability called the Social Model of disability. This says it is society that ‘disables’ people. All the physical and economic barriers in the world, inflexibility in meeting our needs and negative attitudes are what stops us leading full lives.

Clubs and drop-ins
  • Children

Markfield’s highly trained staff are experienced in including children with a wide range of disabilities. Children at Markfield get to make decisions about what to do on clubs by choosing and planning activities.

Disabled children who qualify for a ‘short breaks’ personal budget from the local authority can use this to pay for Markfield after school clubs and playschemes. We also have some reduced price places for children who have additional needs but who do not qualify for a ‘short breaks’ budget.

For more information about club prices or to find out about how to book please contact our Play & Youth Services Manager

  • Young people and adults

Young people help decide what happens on the youth clubs and choose things like music, art, cooking, dance, sport, trips out. We have clubs for adults with learning disabilities, autism or Aspergers Syndrome. These sessions provide a range of self-chosen activities such as arts, music, relaxation and drama. Group members explore and develop their skills and interests in supportive and inclusive sessions.

  • Parents / carers

We focus on ways families can build supportive networks and get involved in the local community such as through our free parent/carer drop ins. There is no need to book, just turn up.

    Friday parents support drop in

Our Friday parents support group runs from 10am to 12pm during school term times. It is a place to get support from other parents and access advice from a family support worker.

    Parents support group meetings

Markfield is running twice-monthly meetings for Haringey parents and carers of children recently diagnose with autism or on the waiting list for assessment.

Meetings are once a month online via Zoom, and once a month in person. Chat with other parents and get support, hear speakers on autism related topics, get information about local support services.

  • Families

As part of our family support services we run a number of drop in sessions for the whole family. These are open to anyone in the community to come along; have fun, relax and meet other families. All our sessions are inclusive for disabled people and their families.

Visit the Markfield website to find out more.

SENDIASS

SENDIASS offers information, advice and support to children and young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), and their parents & carers.

The Haringey Special Educational Needs Information Advice and Support Service is provided by an independent charity called Markfield, and is funded by Haringey Council.

SENDIASS is:

  • Free – you do not need to pay for this service
  • Confidential – we will not share what we talk about with others unless given permission
  • Impartial – we do not take sides and we are independent from the Local Authority (please see our Impartiality Policy for more details)
  • Statutory – every borough has to have a SENDIASS, and the service operates according to National Minimum Standard
