Personalised care and shared decision making

Published: 13/05/23

At NCL Waiting Room, we believe that personalised care and shared decision making are key components in promoting positive mental health outcomes. We understand that everyone’s mental health needs are unique, and a one-size-fits-all approach is not effective. Therefore, we are committed to providing personalised care and facilitating shared decision making for our users.

Personalised Care:

Personalised care is about tailoring mental health care to an individual’s specific needs and preferences. NCL Waiting Room provides a range of resources and tools to help users identify and prioritise their mental health needs and preferences. These resources include self-assessment tools, information about different types of mental health and wellbeing help or support, and guidance on how to access appropriate care. We also encourage users to engage in open and honest communication with their healthcare providers to ensure that their care is personalised and effective.

Shared Decision Making:

Shared decision making is a collaborative approach to decision making that involves patients, their families, and healthcare providers. It’s about working together to make informed decisions about an individual’s mental health care that take into account their preferences, values, and circumstances. At NCL Waiting Room, we believe that shared decision making is essential in promoting positive mental health outcomes. We provide resources to help users understand the shared decision-making process and facilitate communication between users and their healthcare providers. These resources include decision aids, shared decision-making tools, and information about patient rights and responsibilities.

Our Approach:

Our approach to personalised care and shared decision making is aligned with the THRIVE Framework for system change, which emphasises the importance of empowering young people and their families to be active partners in their mental health care. We believe that by providing users with the resources and tools they need to make informed decisions about their mental health care, we can help improve their outcomes and promote their overall wellbeing.
