Barnardo’s Islington Social Emotional Mental Health Service is delivered by a qualified Team of talking and creative Therapists based in the community in Islington. It provides short term individual therapy to the children and young people of Islington (aged 8-18 or up to aged 25 for young people with special educational needs) experiencing difficulties with their social, emotional and mental health, including:

  • Bullying, peer pressure
  • Depression, anxiety, low confidence
  • Mild to moderate self-harm
  • Anger management
  • Exam pressure
  • Eating issues
  • Bereavement

  • What will being seen involve?

Barnardo’s offer an initial assessment over video call or phone call in order to assess the young person’s needs and what support might be most suitable for them, and their family. This is also a chance for the young person to get to know their therapist and see their face/hear their voice.

After this assessment, if the young person is accepted, Barnardo’s will offer an average of 6 1:1 sessions to a young person which can take place either at the young person’s school (if their school is in Islington), face-to-face within Islington (at one of the Community Hubs we use for sessions), or remotely (via phone or video call).

Above all, Barnardo’s aims to ensure that all young people receive the social, emotional, and mental health support they require. We use a child-lead approach, meaning that the Barnardo’s therapists can work with the young people creatively and holistically, taking their individual needs, skills and strengths into account throughout the therapeutic process.
